For most people, pets are more than pets, they are family. February is Responsible Pet Owner’s month and we have a few tips and reminders to ensure your furry family members lead happy and healthy lives.
- The ASPCA has estimated that five to seven million animals enter shelters nationwide every year. Many of these animals will face euthanasia due to overcrowding – you don’t want to add to the problem. So, make sure you are getting your animals spayed or neutered.
- Keep up a good relationship with your vet. Be sure to schedule customary veterinary appointments for all of your pets. This will ensure that problems are caught before they become an even bigger issue. If you become aware of concerning behaviors in your pet, such as significant weight gain, weight loss, or loss of appetite, make sure that you take your pet to the vet right away to prevent any major problems.
- Feed your pet the best you can and be sure they get plenty of exercise. “Feeding an unbalanced diet or feeding to excess can be bad for your pet’s health,” according to Dr. Teresa Rieser, DACVECC. Be sure to avoid feeding your pet certain human foods such as: grapes, raisins, chocolate, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts, and foods with caffeine such as coffee or tea. These foods, among others, can be poisonous to your animals.
We here at Withnell Dodge want to wish all of our customers and their furry friends a happy Responsible Pet Owners’ Month!
